Three of the four flags on screen are current national flags. The fourth is a fake — and a cruel one: every fake here is a near-miss of a real design, missing being real by exactly one detail. Romania with its stripes reversed. Sweden's cross wearing an outline it never has. A Bahrain-style serrated edge with seven points instead of five. Your job: spot the impostor.
It's a different kind of flag knowledge than naming countries. You might not remember whose flag the teal tricolor is — the question is whether it's anyone's at all. When the round resolves, the real flags reveal their countries and the fake explains what gives it away.
How to play
Each round shows four random flags — three real, one fake. Tap the one that is NOT a current national flag.
One pick per round. On the reveal, every real flag shows its country name and the fake is called out.
A one-line explanation tells you why the fake is fake — always one checkable detail: a reversed stripe order, a wrong outline, a color no nation pairs that way.
The timer counts up from your first pick; only your own best time is at stake.
"Review rounds" afterwards shows every set again with the countries labelled.
What counts in this quiz
10 rounds per run, drawn fully at random from 170+ real national flags and a large bank of fakes — every fake has the same chance of appearing, and none repeats within a run.
Real flags are current national flags of sovereign states, and every flag is drawn at its true official proportions — Qatar really is that wide, Switzerland really is square.
The fakes are original designs made for this quiz — checked against current national and regional flags so none of them exists today.
What's not included — and why
Current national flags only — the three real flags are never historical or subnational, and "real" always means a sovereign state's flag in use today. A fake can echo a defunct historical flag (the reveal will say so), but it is never anyone's flag now.
No joke fakes — every impostor uses a genuine vexillological layout, so you can't spot it by silliness alone.
Good to know
Purple is the rarest color in national flags — only Dominica and Nicaragua use it at all, and only in tiny details.
Nepal has the only national flag that isn't a rectangle — two stacked pennants.
Denmark's Dannebrog is the oldest national flag still in use, dating to the 14th century.
